Special-needs bus drivers rewarded for perfect attendance

The drivers for Henry (Ga.) County Schools with exemplary attendance are entered into a drawing, and they are awarded new school buses that will be delivered before the end of the school year. The buses were purchased through the state of Georgia’s “Bonds for Buses” program.

Georgia districts to share buses for field trips

Under the agreement, students from Cobb County School District could be transported to and from events with Marietta City Schools students and vice versa, with each district paying the other up front for the use of their buses. The transportation director for Marietta says that when the districts have shared services in the past, it has saved $100 to $500 depending on the trip.

The school district partners with American Traffic Solutions to equip its buses with the company’s CrossingGuard system, which mounts purpose-built cameras on the side of the school bus. When the stop arm is deployed, the camera automatically detects a vehicle illegally passing the stop arm in either direction and captures video of the violation and still images of a vehicle‘s license plate.

Georgia sees drop in stop-arm violations

In this year's one-day survey, 6,807 vehicles illegally passed stopped school buses in Georgia. That's down from 8,102 in 2011. Still, State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge calls the numbers "very alarming" and urges the public to make student safety a priority.

Marietta City Schools has partnered with American Traffic Solutions to outfit 10 more of its buses with the CrossingGuard school bus arm safety solution, bringing the total number of buses to 12. When the bus’ stop arm is deployed, the system’s camera automatically detects a vehicle illegally passing the stop arm in either direction and captures video of the violation and still images of a vehicle’s license plate.

Georgia district partners with Redflex, Blue Bird to curb stop-arm running

Gwinnett County Public Schools plans to install the Redflex Student Guardian camera system, which is available from Blue Bird dealers like Blue Bird Parts and Service, on 100 school buses by Labor Day and then more later in the school year. The system monitors traffic in both directions, and evidence of potential violations, including video and photos, is submitted to local law enforcement to determine whether a citation is warranted.

Georgia drivers participate in safety competition with propane buses

More than 60 drivers from around the state competed in the roadeo hosted by Georgia’s Pupil Transportation Safety Competition Foundation, where they navigated obstacle courses and challenges and completed a written examination. Blue Bird Propane-Powered Vision school buses were provided by Hall County Schools and Appling County Schools.
