Distracted bus driver cited in crash that injured 29 students

John Logan, a Lewis County (Mo.) C-1 School District bus driver, is charged with improper lane usage resulting in an accident on April 1. While Logan slides a trash can to a child who says she is sick, the front right tire drops off the road and he reportedly over-steers to correct the bus, causing it to slide down an embankment and roll on its top. The Missouri State Highway Patrol report concludes that Logan was at fault because the driver is responsible for staying focused on driving.

School bus driver honored for starting reading program

The Missouri Association for Pupil Transportation names Rudy Rhodes of the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District the 2014 School Bus Driver of the Year at its annual conference on Wednesday. Rhodes was nominated by a coworker for his community service activities, including initiation of the Book Buddies program at Prairie View Elementary School.

Man looking for ride allegedly steals school bus

Donald L. Francis is charged with tampering with a motor vehicle in the first degree, a Class C felony, after allegedly stealing a North Wood R-IV (Mo.) School District bus. Francis admits to sheriff’s deputies that he was intoxicated and looking for a ride, found a school bus with keys in it, and drove to St. Clair, which is where authorities found the bus.

District honored for school bus routing after tornado

The transportation department at Missouri's Joplin Schools receives the 2014 Public Sector Excellence Award from Tyler Technologies for its creative use of the Versatrans transportation management system following a May 2011 tornado, including identifying students affected by the disaster and creating new routes around the damaged areas. Two more school districts are among the seven other award recipients.

The man reportedly approaches two students who are on the bus, but they are able to disembark, and district staff personnel monitor the situation until law enforcement arrives. When asked why he had come to the school, the man says he’d come to take a child.
