Thomas Built calls for Driver of the Year nominations

For the sixth annual contest, students in kindergarten through sixth grade are invited to submit essays of at least 90 words to nominate their favorite school bus drivers. The grand prize winner will receive a laptop computer, a Thomas Built jacket and a Saf-T-Liner C2 school bus lunch box, and the nominated driver will receive a $1,000 Visa gift card.

District to save $100K with new field trip initiatives

Poway (Calif.) Unified School District Director of Transportation Timothy Purvis tells SBF that the district is on track to save this much by the end of the school year through his efforts to assign regular-route bus drivers to transport students during weekday night field trips, and through the Flexible Route Driver program. Under the program, three drivers make themselves available at all times during seven-day periods to work on field trips and serve as substitute drivers.

The mother of a 9-year-old boy says her son was hospitalized after he was kicked by an older student while riding the bus. She wants the other student to be taken off of the bus, but she says school officials told her that the student cannot be removed because he has special needs.

Rhode Island family challenges school bus monitor bill

New legislation would eliminate the state's requirement for monitors to be on all school buses for kindergartners up to fifth-graders. The Pendergasts, whose daughter was struck and killed by her own school bus in 1985, are in favor of preserving the mandate, saying that monitors help to increase student safety.

Minnesota school bus seat belt cutter requirements clarified
