Ohio district maintains county’s EMS vehicles

Gallipolis City School District partners with Gallia County Commissioners to service the county’s five EMS vehicles and one rescue truck. Troy Johnson, the district’s transportation/safety director, tells SBF that the partnership is saving the county approximately $30 a work hour, and the technicians work in staggered shifts so that it doesn’t interfere with their school bus-related duties.

IMMI offers discount for replacing old restraints

Through the SafeGuard Summer Exchange Program, a school district cuts the manufacturing labels and the webbing they’re sewn to from a retired vest or other child restraint and ships them to IMMI. For each valid product exchanged, the district receives a $15 coupon that can be applied to the purchase of one new STAR restraint from an authorized STAR distributor.

District reduces parent drop-offs with Trip Tracker

With this initiative, Boulder Valley School District students earn “dollars” based on the number of times they walk, bike, carpool or ride the bus to school, and those dollars can be spent at local businesses. Peter Hurst, who developed the initiative, tells SBF that Trip Tracker has helped decrease by 117,000 miles the distance that parents drive their children to and from school.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration proposes a new federal motor vehicle safety standard to require ESC systems on large commercial trucks, motorcoaches and some other large buses — but not school or transit buses. N.Y. district’s walking distance unchanged following vote

Pearl River School District students in grades 9 through 12 who live within three miles of school and eighth-graders within two miles of school are not eligible to take the school bus. A petition to reduce the limit to 1.5 miles is narrowly defeated.
