Minnesota special-needs pupil transporters honored

Special-education school bus drivers and special-education transportation assistants are recognized for service excellence by the Minnesota Special Education Transportation Committee, in cooperation with the Minnesota Association for Pupil Transportation. First place winners in each category will have an opportunity to receive free training at the Minnesota School Bus Train the Trainer Instructor seminars in July.

Dubai school transport conference draws global crowd

About 17 nations are represented at Dubai’s first school transportation conference. Speakers and delegates make recommendations in such areas as school transportation safety and security, driver training and road layout around schools. New York associations respond to alcohol interlocks bill

The bill, which was drafted last fall, would require the devices to be installed in school buses in New York state as a way to prevent drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel of the bus. New York School Bus Contractors Association board member Paul Mori and New York Association for Pupil Transportation Executive Director Peter Mannella provide testimony during a Senate hearing on Thursday, expressing concerns about the legislation and offering potential alternatives.

FMCSA declares trucker in fatal hit-and-run an ‘imminent hazard’

The driver, Johnny Allen Spell, was operating a tractor-trailer when he failed to stop for a school bus, which had engaged its warning lights and was unloading passengers. Spell’s vehicle fatally struck a child. Federal investigators are also reviewing the hiring practices and compliance records of Ricky Lucas Trucking, Spell’s employer.

Child Safety Network offers Safe Bus program

In partnership with the School Bus Safety Co., the Child Safety Network initiative aims to reduce school bus accidents — with an added benefit of generating revenue for districts. The free Safe Bus program, which receives funds from corporate sponsorships, includes a comprehensive training curriculum, school bus safety PSAs, and a GPS and parental notification system.

Minneapolis district builds mobile command center

Minneapolis Public Schools’ plant operations and transportation services team spent four years converting an older school bus into the mobile command center. It’s outfitted with such equipment as a flat-screen TV, two-way radios and laptops, and it’s designed to be used as a command post in a major emergency that prohibits the district’s buses from successfully transporting students.
