Ontario police observe School Bus Safety Month

The Greater Sudbury Police Service Traffic Management Unit cracked down on motorists who committed safety-related infractions in September, with the efforts focused in school zones. Among the offenses were 105 speeding violations, 15 hand-held device offenses for cell phone use and reports of illegal bus passing.

Car renovator to restore rare vintage school bus

Rich Willard, owner of Vintage Motorcars, a restoration business, is restoring a circa 1948 Nash school bus for a Paris-based collector of Nash vehicles. The project, Willard’s first bus restoration, likely will take more than 3,000 man hours to complete and will cost in the $150,000 range.

Utah’s Murrell Martin named NCST chair

The state director will officially assume the role at the conclusion of the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services conference in Grand Rapids, Mich., later this week, and in the role, he will preside over the 16th National Congress on School Transportation in 2015. Martin replaces West Virginia state director Ben Shew, who is retiring at the end of this month.

Florida district cuts diesel use by 151K gallons in a year

Orange County Public Schools' combined initiative of anti-idling, biodiesel and fuel-efficient buses resulted in an overall reduction of 151,788 gallons of diesel fuel this past year. The economic benefit was a cost avoidance of $538,847 in fuel costs to the district, and the environmental benefit was a reduction of 1,503 metric tons of carbon matter output.

Striking Boston bus drivers return to work

After walking off the job on Tuesday, the approximately 300 drivers have returned to work and yellow bus service has resumed for Boston Public Schools. The union that represents the drivers says they agreed to return to work after the contractor that serves the district agreed to meet to discuss driver grievances.
