NHTSA: 0.35% of fatal crashes were school transportation related

The latest federal data show that of the 348,253 fatal motor vehicle traffic crashes from 2003 to 2012, 1,222 were classified as related to school transportation. A large majority (71%) of those killed in school transportation-related crashes in that 10-year span were occupants of other vehicles.

Former director pleads guilty to records tampering

Douglas Wessling will reportedly receive two years of probation and an order to pay a $1,000 fine for the crime, which is an aggravated misdemeanor. In the fall, he resigned as transportation director from Iowa's Galva-Holstein Community School District after state inspectors found that buses in the fleet that had issues had not been repaired, despite Wessling notifying the state otherwise.

Pickup truck loses control, kills school bus driver

In a snowstorm near Aspen Park, Colo., last week, the driver of a bus with other bus drivers on board had pulled over to put on snow chains. A Colorado State Patrol trooper tells SBF that a pickup truck attempted to slow down and lost control, crashing into the bus and fatally striking John "Jack" Garland, one of the bus drivers who had gotten out to help.

Man illegally passes 4 school buses, sideswipes 3 cars

An employee at a Rhode Island school writes down Michael J. Lewis' license plate number and calls the police, who charge Lewis with driving with a suspended license and leaving the scene of an accident, and cite him for passing four occupied school buses.

Update: Wyoming gov. signs bill to require stop-arm cameras

Under the new law, as of the 2016-17 school year, all school buses in the state will have to be equipped with external cameras to capture evidence of illegal passing. Up to $5 million will be appropriated to reimburse school districts for 100% of the costs of the video surveillance systems.

NTSB investigating crashes involving tire failure

In one of the crashes, an SUV’s tire tread separated, and the vehicle collided with a school bus carrying a high school baseball team. The National Transportation Safety Board is also investigating a crash of a church van in which the tire that failed was part of a product recall.
