California district ends school bus pilot program

In March, Etiwanda School District launched a "shared cost model" pilot transportation program for students who live at least 3 miles from school. District officials say that the program "did not generate the interest nor the revenue that was expected," and the board decides to discontinue it after the last day of school.

Deputies to ride buses for increased passenger safety

The armed law enforcement officers will ride on Polk County Public Schools buses that transport students to two alternative high schools in Florida after two students were caught on video allegedly punching another student. The temporary measure will be in place until the end of the school year, with the hope for a new safety plan in place for the fall, officials say.

Transportation department awarded for recruitment efforts

Houston Independent School District’s transportation department receives a community service award from the Near Northwest Management District for these efforts. The department partners with this agency to recruit bus drivers who live in the area that the Near Northwest Management District serves, and it also has a recruiting team at each bus terminal that visits neighborhoods, businesses and churches to recruit drivers.

Bus driver arranges farm field trip for student

When Lisa Teepen learned that a student on her bus route had missed a kindergarten field trip to a farm, she got permission from the student’s family and the school administration for him to join another kindergarten class's trip to the farm. Teepen was scheduled to drive that group the following day and wanted to be sure the student did not miss out on the experience.

Georgia district sees 42% drop in stop-arm violations

In two years, illegal passing of Marietta City Schools buses decreased from 192 reported incidents in a day to 112. Since the district equipped 12 of its buses with stop-arm cameras last year, police have issued 830 citations.

District’s operations division honored for performance excellence

The operations division for Florida’s Orange County Public Schools receives the Governor’s Sterling Award, as does the Walton County Tax Collector’s Office. Within the school district’s operations division, the transportation department has sustained on-time arrival of buses of better than 98% from 2010 to 2013, and the transportation cost per student has been reduced from $914 to $869.

First Student helps collect 12,300 items for food pantries

The school bus contractor’s Belleville, Ill., terminal partners with two local school districts and the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce to collect 12,300 items of non-perishable food for the seventh annual “Drive Away Hunger” campaign. The items are donated to four food pantries in the area.

Jeff Jones to retire from executive role at Cummins

Jones, who is vice president of Cummins’ North American engine business and marketing communications, will step down on June 30 after 37 years with the company. Amy Boerger will succeed Jones in leadership of Cummins’ North American engine business, overseeing national accounts, field sales and support. Lori Thompson will assume the position of vice president — engine business marketing.
