CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A student here has died after a hit-and-run crash near her school bus stop on Monday morning, police said.
At around 6:18 a.m., officers responded to a call of a hit-and-run crash at the corner of NE 3rd Ave. and NE 19th Terrace, according to a news release from the Cape Coral Police Department.
Police said the student, who was identified as Layla Aiken, 8, was sitting on the edge of the roadway on the northeast corner of the intersection waiting for her school bus when a red pickup truck made a sharp turn, hit and rolled over her, and then continued driving without rendering aid or providing information. Aiken was taken to a local hospital where she later passed away as a result of the injuries she sustained from the crash, according to police.
On Tuesday, police said they obtained the pickup truck that is believed to be involved in the crash, and they have identified a person of interest. Police added that they are working with the State Attorney’s Office and have been collecting surveillance video from the area. Police are urging anyone with information about the crash to contact them as soon as possible.
A GoFundMe page has also been set up to help Aiken’s family cover funeral expenses.
