ROBINSON, Texas — A 3-year-old student who was found unresponsive and not breathing while aboard his school bus on Friday has passed away, officials said.

Officers from Robinson Police Department responded to the incident at around 7:20 a.m. in the 600 block of East Moonlight Dr., KWTX reports. Robinson Independent School District (ISD) said in a Facebook post on Friday that the student suffered a medical emergency while being transported on the school bus. Chief Phillip Prasifka with Robinson Police Department said, according to the news source, that first responders performed CPR and the student was taken to a local hospital where he was resuscitated and then flown to another hospital in Temple. He passed away on Sunday evening.

Texas Child Protective Investigations told KWTX that it is investigating the incident, in which the student, who reportedly had special needs, was found with a seat belt wrapped around his neck. At this time, it is unclear what type of seat belt or restraint was used.

On Monday, Robinson ISD said in another Facebook post that it is “heartbroken” about the passing of the student, identified by the district as Rocket. The district added that it is grieving the loss with his parents and family, and asked that the community continue praying for “this precious family often as they face extremely difficult days ahead.” The district also said that Robinson ISD counselors will be available for students and staff during this time.
