MARS, Pa. — Dozens of students were taken to the hospital after their school bus crashed and overturned on Monday.
The Mars Area School District posted on its website that the crash occurred at approximately 3 p.m. The district told the Associated Press that some minor injuries were reported.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) told KDKA that the right side of the bus hit a cushion at the end of a barrier, and then struck a guard rail before rolling down the hill. The cause of the accident is being investigated, according to the news source.
A student on the bus told KDKA that she was on the phone when she “heard a weird noise, and it was all a blur. We just went over.”
A total of 40 students were on the bus during the crash, KDKA reports. Six were transported to hospitals by ambulance, 22 were taken to the hospital by bus, and 12 students went home with their parents.
PennDOT officials told WPXI that there have been three accidents in the area since April — two of which involved school buses — and that the department is reviewing a construction work zone setup in the area.
