Among the new stamps for 2023 by the U.S. Postal Service this week: a familiar yellow school bus with an old-fashioned school house in the background.
The School Bus serves as a new additional-ounce stamp, available in panes of 20 and coils of 100. According to a news release, the stamp “celebrates the iconic yellow school bus and its role in ensuring that millions of children get to school and home again every day.”
The stamp’s image is the creation of artist Steve Wolf. According to the USPS, Wolf “picked up a pencil when he was 4 and never put it down. His childhood hobby became a successful career during a journey that led him from small-town Nebraska to the big city of Austin, Texas.”
This stamp marks Wolf’s first project with the postal service.
James McKean, senior public relations representative for the USPS, said the postal service’s Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee receives more than 30,000 suggestions for stamp subjects each year. “From those suggestions it makes recommendations to the Postmaster General on each year’s stamp program,” McKean said.
The 12-member committee was founded in 1957 and uses collective expertise in history, science, technology, art, education, sports, and other areas of public interest to base recommendations on stamp subjects for final approval.
