Motorist Hits Crossing Guard After Passing Stopped School Bus
Mary Claire Jones of Pennsylvania is struck by the vehicle after it drives past the stopped school bus. Jones is listed in critical condition.
WYOMING, Pa. — A motorist who struck a crossing guard here on Tuesday afternoon is being cited for failing to stop for a school bus, police said.
WNEP reported on Tuesday that the incident occurred just before 4 p.m. along the intersection of Wyoming Avenue and Third Street. WNEP reported on Wednesday that 71-year-old crossing guard Mary Claire Jones was struck by a car while helping elementary school students from Wyoming Area Primary Center depart from their school bus. Officer Macson McGuirk told WBRE that the driver, whose name has not been released, hit Jones after driving past the stopped bus, and that environmental conditions, such as the glare from the sun, were factors in the crash. Jones was listed in critical condition on Wednesday.
Amanda Zupko, a medical technician who witnessed the crash, told WBRE that her 7-year-old son was about to get off the bus when Jones was struck by the vehicle. Zupko added that she was able to call 911 before rendering aid to Jones.
Janet Serino, the superintendent for Wyoming Area School District, told WBRE that the district has implemented a new school bus policy due to the crash, in which students will now be dropped off on the side of the road where they live, and will not have to cross the highway.
