AMES, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) recently unveiled a page on its website dedicated to school bus safety.
The page touts the school bus as the safest way for children to get to and from school, and it highlights the importance of children being aware of the danger zone around a school bus. A diagram is available that shows the danger zone.
Also on the page is information on the "Keep Aware Driving — Youth Need School Safety Act," commonly known as Kadyn's Law, which was approved by Gov. Terry Branstad earlier this year and increases the penalties for illegally passing a stopped school bus.
Tips for safe school bus loading and unloading procedures are provided for bus riders, along with instructional videos.
The page also includes training resources for bus drivers, school bus inspection schedules, Iowa school bus crash-related statistics, and the 2011 and 2012 national stop-arm survey results from the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services.
