EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Indiana Public Media reports that a school district here created a program that is teaching 21 bus drivers Spanish during their summer vacation so they can better communicate with a growing number of Latino students in the area.
The district created the voluntary program after one bus driver asked for resources to help her communicate with Spanish-speaking students.
The teacher of the course told the news outlet that the goal of the class is to equip the bus drivers with just enough of the language to make the Spanish-speaking students comfortable, such as saying a few words to welcome the kids on the first day of school.
