MARIETTA, Ga. — Cobb County School District’s board of education voted last week on a measure aimed at reducing school bus stop-arm violations within the district, the West Cobb Patch reports.
The board voted 7 to zero to sign an agreement with American Traffic Solutions (ATS) to issue $300 citations to motorists who illegally pass stopped school buses. The company, which with AngelTrax offers the CrossingGuard School Bus Stop Arm Enforcement System, would keep 75% of the proceeds and the rest would go to the school district. The measure still requires the approval of the Cobb Board of Commissioners.
Greater stop-arm enforcement was prompted by the 2009 death of elementary school student Karla Campos, who was struck by an elderly driver as she exited a bus. Chris Ragsdale, the district’s deputy superintendent for operational support, said that all new buses ordered will be outfitted with the stop-arm camera system, and that revenue isn’t the goal of the contract. "What we want is to have zero stop-arm violations in this district," he told the West Cobb Patch.
