Bus driver dies before starting routes
Special-education bus driver Tammy Grant, 45, called for assistance to get off the bus and was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Grant was an employee of Durham School Services and had been driving buses for a South Carolina school district for more than 20 years.
BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. — Special-education bus driver Tammy Grant, 45, died Monday soon after arriving at the district office to start her morning routes, Beaufort County School District officials told Herald Online.
Grant called for assistance to get off the bus and “wasn’t doing well” when several people made their way to the parking lot to help her, said Gregory McCord, the district's chief student services officer.
Beaufort County Deputy Coroner David Ott told the news outlet that emergency services took Grant to the hospital and she was pronounced dead at 8:15 a.m. The cause of death has not been determined.
Grant was an employee of Durham School Services and had been driving buses for the district for more than 20 years, according to McCord. He added that Grant “was friendly, positive and had a great spirit.”
