On Monday this week, a 5-year-old boy died after getting off his school bus.
He’s been identified as Lens Arthur Joseph, who attended UP Academy Dorchester, a charter school in the Boston Public Schools district.
A neighbor told local media that he saw a kid on the ground, a family member screaming, and the substitute bus driver panicking. The same neighbor repositioned the boy on his side until paramedics arrived. The student later died in the hospital.
Reports say the boy was with his older cousin, and both were dropped off on another street instead of in front of the home as usual, which is why he crossed in front of the bus.
Other children were on the bus at the time. Police are still investigating, but said the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities.
A vigil is planned, and the district is offering support services for students, staff, and families in the community, said a Boston.com report.
In other school bus accident news, on the same day in Tennessee, a school bus driver lost control, struck a bridge, and flipped on its side into a nearby creek. Nineteen students were on board at the time; the driver and five students sustained injuries, thankfully all are OK.
