U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced her resignation on Thursday in a letter to President Donald Trump, citing his role in sparking the mob of his supporters who breached the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.
In the letter, obtained by Education Week, DeVos called the behavior of the violent protestors "unconscionable" and wrote, "There is no mistaking the impact your rhetoric had on the situation, and it is the inflection point for me."
She added in the letter that "Impressionable children are watching all of this, and they are learning from us.”
Along those lines, DeVos had also released a statement on Wednesday, noting the need to set a better example for children.
“…we must teach them the solemn obligations and duties that come with the title ‘American.’ The peaceful transfer of power is what separates American representative democracy from banana republics,” she added in the statement, referring to the meeting of members of Congress on Wednesday to certify the 2020 presidential election results.
DeVos’s departure is one in a wave of resignations of White House officials, including that of U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, who announced her exit on Thursday.
DeVos’s resignation is effective Friday.
