Kentucky School Bus Driver Saves Family From Mobile Home Fire

BEATTYVILLE, Ky. — A school bus driver here is being credited for saving a family from a fire that broke out on the front porch of their mobile home.

Norman Miller, a driver with Lee County School District, was driving his regular bus route on Kentucky Route 11 last week when he noticed a fire on the front porch of a mobile home, according to a statement posted on Lee County Emergency Management’s Facebook page.

Miller, who also works with the Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department, told Lee County Emergency Management officials that he stopped his bus, maintained the safety of the few students on board the bus, and then notified Lee County School District about the incident via radio and requested that the district alert local fire officials.

Before emergency personnel arrived on the scene, Miller said he was able to use the water hose of the residence to extinguish the fire, while also hitting the side of the trailer to wake the residents sleeping inside. Officials confirmed that after putting out the fire, Miller was still able to continue on his route and transport his students to school on time. Officials added that Miller’s actions “not only saved the mobile home, but most likely saved the lives of the occupants inside,” and that his actions “reflected both his dedication to the fire service and to the citizens of Lee County.”
