ZANESVILLE, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash involving a Tri-Valley Local Schools bus.

The crash occurred at approximately 8:18 a.m. Wednesday on State Route 60 in Muskingum County.

The school bus was headed southbound when it drove off the right side of the roadway and rolled over after striking a utility pole. The driver, Carol Oler, 47, was transporting seven students to Nashport (Ohio) Elementary School.

A 6-year-old child, Kasey King, was killed, and six other children were injured when the bus crashed. The driver was flown from the scene to a hospital in Columbus with serious injuries. The six injured children were transported to a hospital in Zanesville with mild to moderate injuries.

In a letter to parents posted on the Tri-Valley Local Schools Website, Principal Fritzi Gibson and Assistant Principal John Harris said a team of grief counselors was available at the Nashport school on the day of the crash and today. The letter also urged parents to allow students to return to school today, suggesting that the school environment would provide support and closure before the summer break.
