Iowa adopts increased sanctions for illegal bus passing

The emergency administrative rule that took effect on Wednesday provides that a person’s driving privilege in the state will be suspended 30 days for a first conviction, 90 days for a second conviction and 180 days for a third or subsequent conviction. The rule adopted by the Iowa Department of Transportation is in response to the provisions of “Kadyn’s Law,” which was signed by Gov. Terry Branstad earlier this year.

Stop-arm running in the crosshairs

Since the West Virginia Department of Education sent me the footage of a middle school student nearly being struck by a car illegally passing his school bus, I’ve probably watched it at least a dozen times. I can’t help but think of one of my own kids in that frightening situation.

Officials at Mesa County Valley School District say the change is “the result of further budget reductions the district is facing.” School bus service will be provided for elementary students who live more than two miles from school and for middle and high school students who live more than three miles from school.
