New Idaho law protects bus drivers who come to aid of students

Gov. Butch Otter approves Senate Bill 1232, which amends current law to provide that school bus drivers, while they are acting within the scope of their duties, will not be civilly or criminally liable for reasonably acting to assist a bus passenger whom the driver believes to be in imminent danger of harm or injury. The law will take effect on July 1.

Bus driver honored as state conducts illegal-passing sweep

Charles Albertson, a bus driver for New York's Wappingers Central School District, was named the Dutchess County Traffic Safety Board and Mid Hudson Transportation Supervisors’ Association's School Bus Driver of the Year last week. Meanwhile, the state conducted its annual Operation Safe Stop initiative, bringing together school bus operations and law enforcement agencies to ticket drivers who illegally pass school buses.

Oklahoma district supports Child Abuse Awareness Month

The transportation department at Woodward Public Schools observes the cause in April by decorating its buses with blue ribbons, an international symbol for child abuse prevention. Unattended school bus rolls, strikes student

Investigators say they believe the bus driver left the bus unattended with four students on board, and the vehicle then crossed the road and struck a small child who was standing on a corner. All five children have been released from the hospital, and the driver has been arrested on multiple charges.

Students not seriously injured when bus overturns

The three children on a Copperas Cove (Texas) Independent School District bus are restrained in their wheelchairs when the bus is broadsided by a car. They are left hanging upside down and have to be cut free of their restraints, but they, along with the bus driver and attendant, only sustain minor injuries.

Bill to increase bus-passing penalties approved by New York Senate

Senate Bill S.1878 would amend current law by adding a 60-day driver’s license suspension when an individual is convicted two or more times of passing a stopped school bus within a period of 10 years. In late March, the bill was sent to the New York State Assembly’s transportation committee for consideration.

U.S. DOT unveils distracted driving campaign

The effort is the Department of Transportation's first-ever national advertising campaign and law enforcement crackdown to combat distracted driving. Ads using the phrase “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.” will run from April 7 to 15, which coincides with a nationwide law enforcement crackdown in states with distracted driving bans.
