California district ends school bus pilot program

In March, Etiwanda School District launched a "shared cost model" pilot transportation program for students who live at least 3 miles from school. District officials say that the program "did not generate the interest nor the revenue that was expected," and the board decides to discontinue it after the last day of school.

Pepper spray on school bus disrupts trip to volcano

The bus was en route to Washington's Mount St. Helens. After a student discharged pepper spray, the bus driver began to have trouble breathing but was able to pull over safely "before she became overwhelmed," according to the Washington State Patrol.

First Student helps collect 12,300 items for food pantries

The school bus contractor’s Belleville, Ill., terminal partners with two local school districts and the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce to collect 12,300 items of non-perishable food for the seventh annual “Drive Away Hunger” campaign. In two years, illegal passing of Marietta City Schools buses decreased from 192 reported incidents in a day to 112. Since the district equipped 12 of its buses with stop-arm cameras last year, police have issued 830 citations.

Collins Bus Corp. launches new CNG Type A school bus

The school bus manufacturer has partnered with Westport on the bus, which features the Westport WiNG Power System, a dedicated natural gas fuel system. The bus also features a large passenger-side cab view window, an exterior storage compartment, and it provides an estimated 250- to 300-mile range. Collins Bus is accepting orders for the bus, and delivery to customers will begin in the fall, according to the company.

Associations support bus safety campaign, legislation

The New York School Bus Contractors Association joins the New York Association for Pupil Transportation in supporting Operation Safe Stop, which promotes school bus safety education and enforcement in New York state. The contractors association uses the occasion to support a New York senator’s bill that calls for increased illegal bus-passing penalties.

Congressman pushes school bus safety 'overhaul' bill

U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Iowa) introduces legislation in the House of Representatives that would set minimum penalties nationwide for stop-arm running. The bill would also mandate that all states require background checks for school bus drivers, and it would create a school bus seat belt demonstration program, among other measures.
