Maine school bus damaged in fire

No one is injured in the blaze, but the Portland Public Schools bus sustains an estimated $35,000 in damage. The district says that an employee was patching the bus' seats using tape, liquid vinyl and a heat gun when the fire began.

Diesel retrofit supplier Cleaire shuts down

The company, which offered a variety of diesel particulate filters to retrofit school buses and other vehicles, closed last month. Cleaire’s LongMile filter has reportedly been linked to brush fires and was voluntarily recalled last year. A California Air Resources Board official says that “it is paramount that the safety concerns with the Cleaire LongMile system are immediately addressed.”

Bill would exempt Louisiana districts from fuel tax

Under the new legislation, fuel used for school buses operated by municipal and parish school boards would not be subject to the state fuel tax. Currently, contractor-operated school buses in Louisiana qualify for a refund of three-fourths of the fuel tax.

Iowa bus inspection fee to increase, pending governor approval

The state Board of Education approves the proposal to increase the fee from $28 to $40, which will enable the state to hire an additional school bus inspector. As the change awaits approval from the office of the governor, state pupil transportation director Max Christensen tells SBF that “the increase is vitally important to keeping a viable school bus inspection process in the state of Iowa.”
