Lynn Maw of Utah has heard a lot on her school bus, but one youngster’s candid comment stands out as the funniest.
Maw has served as a school bus driver for the past 24 years. She dropped me a line after reading my recent editorial about retired school bus driver Tom Brandon’s book. Maw said that she, like many drivers, could also write a book about her experiences in pupil transportation.
When it comes to amusing anecdotes, the standout from Maw’s bus was an encounter with a girl in kindergarten. As kids often do, this young passenger disregarded political correctness while revealing potentially embarrassing information about her parents.
The conversation went like this:
Girl: “Are you married?”
Maw: “No, I’m not.”
Girl: “Well, then how do you get money? My mom always has to ask my dad for money.”
As Maw recalled, the girl’s innocent remark made her day, but she also felt obligated to set the record straight.
“I did explain to her afterwards,” Maw told me, “that that's why I drive a bus … to earn money.”

Most applicants sought grant funding to acquire electric school buses, with propane coming in a distant second. No one indicated plans to purchase compressed natural gas (CNG) buses in this round.
