Sometimes the words that stick with you are the ones you never expect to hear. Recently, I was in Cleveland, Ohio, driving a Ram 1500. It was a Saturday, and we had stopped at a local mall. Apparently, everyone else in Cleveland decided to go shopping at the same time.

Stay with me; I know this is not the start of a typical School Bus Fleet editorial.

The parking lot was packed. Now, I drive trucks daily, but there is a difference between being comfortable behind the wheel of a full-size pickup and trying to squeeze one into a crowded mall parking lot where the spaces seem designed for anything but a full-size pickup.

I found a space and managed to get the truck into it without much trouble. Technically, I was parked. Practically, there was a problem. I was pretty sure I wasn't getting out of the truck. And judging by how little space remained between the Ram and the vehicles beside me, I wasn't entirely convinced the people parked next to me were going anywhere either.

I noticed the woman in the vehicle beside me trying to get out, so I pulled forward slightly into an open space ahead to give her room. A moment later, she got out of her vehicle and started walking toward the truck.

For a second, I wasn't sure what was coming. Maybe she was annoyed because I'd taken too long maneuvering, trying to give everyone space. Maybe I was about to receive some unsolicited commentary on my parking abilities.

Instead, the first thing she said was: "Hello! I'm a school bus driver. You can trust me." And strangely enough, I immediately did.

Someone Who Understood the Situation

Ended up, she wasn't there to criticize my parking. She was there to help.

She knew there was a better spot just a few spaces down and helped me figure out the easiest way to get there. Then she stepped into the lot and briefly held up traffic, giving me room to maneuver the larger pickup safely into the new space.

 It was truly a small thing, but it made an awkward situation instantly easier. A few minutes later, I was parked. I could open my door. The people around me could open theirs. Traffic started moving again, and everyone went on with their Saturday.

I went inside the mall, came back later, and drove away without another problem. It was a very small moment. But I've thought about it quite a bit since.

‘You Can Trust Me’

Something about the confidence behind those words. "I'm a school bus driver." That was all the qualification she thought she needed to give me. And in that parking lot, it was.

She understood vehicle size. She understood turning space. She understood traffic movement and how to safely guide another driver through a tight situation. Most importantly, she understood how to help without making the person behind the wheel feel foolish for needing it.

Those skills don't disappear when a school bus driver clocks out for the day. Professional drivers spend their working lives constantly reading what's happening around them. They watch mirrors, anticipate what other drivers will do, judge distances, navigate spaces most motorists wouldn't want to attempt, and make hundreds of small decisions that keep people moving safely.

School bus drivers do all of that while carrying some particularly important passengers.

We talk frequently in this industry about driver shortages, recruiting, retention, training, safety, and the enormous responsibility that comes with operating a school bus. Those conversations matter, of course.

But sometimes a random interaction in a crowded parking lot is a good reminder of what sits underneath it all. Experience, awareness, confidence, and a willingness to help someone else navigate a difficult situation.

I never got that school bus driver's name. She probably went on with her Saturday and didn't think much more about the woman wrestling a Ram 1500 through a crowded parking lot.

But I certainly remember her. Because sometimes all it takes is five words to remind you exactly how much trust we place in the people behind the wheel.

"I'm a school bus driver. You can trust me." Turns out, she was absolutely right.
