Bus driver loses her legs following accident

Police in Flat Rock, Mich., say that the victim, who was not named, was helping another driver plug a bus into a battery charging system when the bus accelerated uncontrolled, hitting the victim. She sustains severe trauma to her lower extremities and has to have both legs amputated above the knee.

Charges dropped for boy who brought fake gun on bus

The 10-year-old flashed an orange-tipped replica gun to another student on the school bus, and he was arrested the next day after another bus passenger reported him. Three weeks after the incident, prosecutors say they “did not feel it was appropriate or productive to proceed with criminal prosecution.”

Longtime Durham general manager retires

Marilee Mayes retired from the position at the school bus contractor’s Hutchinson, Kan., terminal on Friday after 27 years on the job. Mayes oversaw the student transportation for Hutchinson Unified School District 308, and she now serves the school system as a substitute school bus driver.

The school bus manufacturer is once again recognizing bus drivers and the job that they do by asking students to nominate their drivers for the Children’s Choice School Bus Driver of the Year contest. Students in kindergarten through sixth grade are invited to submit essays of at least 90 words describing what makes their driver special.

John Tompkins worked as a school bus driver to supplement his income as mayor of small town McKee, Ky. He tells a local newspaper that on Tuesday, he may have been preoccupied with his mayoral duties when he accidentally left a 5-year-old on his bus.

Maine school bus damaged in fire

No one is injured in the blaze, but the Portland Public Schools bus sustains an estimated $35,000 in damage. The district says that an employee was patching the bus' seats using tape, liquid vinyl and a heat gun when the fire began.

Roundabout planned for intersection in fatal New Jersey bus crash

Burlington County officials say the roundabout, which has been in the works since 2004, is devised to improve traffic flow, and it is not a direct response to last year’s crash in Chesterfield involving a school bus and a dump truck. That accident resulted in the death of one student and injuries to 17 others. A county spokeswoman tells The Times of Trenton that the county implemented several safety measures at the intersection on its own volition following the crash.
