U.S. DOT unveils distracted driving campaign

The effort is the Department of Transportation's first-ever national advertising campaign and law enforcement crackdown to combat distracted driving. Ads using the phrase “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.” will run from April 7 to 15, which coincides with a nationwide law enforcement crackdown in states with distracted driving bans.

Suffolk Transportation launches child-check bus safety solution

The New York school bus contractor partners with Child Check-Mate System and Zonar for the system, which institutes multiple safety checks for sleeping or unseen children. When a child wakes up and moves around the vehicle, Child Check-Mate System’s Double Check feature will turn on the vehicle’s interior lights, speak to the child and activate Zonar’s system, which will send a message to bus company employees so they can respond.

DriveLogik monitors driver performance to improve behavior

The new technology, which can be used on school buses, features the Driver Awareness Panel, an in-vehicle display that provides drivers with coaching through visual and audible notifications to drive more efficiently. Company officials say that by helping to improve driving behavior, the product can deliver fuel savings of up to 10%.

21 charged with cheating on CDL exams

Wednesday's arrests in the New York City region are part of an ongoing investigation into a commercial driver license test cheating scheme first revealed in September. The Manhattan district attorney says that the 21 defendants "are accused of fraudulently obtaining specialized licenses, putting at risk the lives of everyone who shares our roadways.”

Lightning Hybrids has released a new version of its hydraulic hybrid system for certain types of school and commercial buses. Hydraulic pumps/motors and an accumulator (power storage unit) are added to existing engines to store braking energy and use it to accelerate the vehicle.
