Maryland county urges higher stop-arm running fines

Under state law, the maximum penalty allowed is $250 per offense, but Maryland’s district court set the fine at $125 as an incentive for violators to pay it instead of challenging the ticket. County officials will ask the Maryland General Assembly to increase the maximum fine to $500, in an attempt to move the actual fine to $250.

Crash between 2 school buses kills bus aide, 2 students

The Knoxville (Tenn.) School District buses were traveling in opposite directions when one made a sharp left turn, crossed over a median, and struck the side of the other bus, which flipped onto its side. Two children and the aide were pronounced dead at the scene.

Murfreesboro (Tenn.) City Schools bus driver Vegas Cowart and her assistant Ed Arno started a drawing contest to give away turkeys to two students on their route. They got many more entries than expected and help from the transportation department and community, and ended up giving away more than 90 turkeys.

Driver admits leaving special-needs kids on bus in summer heat

Kimberly Moumblow, a school bus driver for Vernon (N.J.) Township School District, pleads guilty to cruelty and neglect of a child for leaving two students, ages 7 and 9, alone on a parked bus in July for about 45 minutes. Sentencing is anticipated for Jan. 16.
