DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A total of 90 school bus batteries have been stolen from the DeKalb County School District since October, Channel 2 Action News reports.
DeKalb County Schools police told the news outlet several school buses were disabled when thieves took the batteries, and, in some instances, a dozen batteries were taken at a time. As a result, some Stone Mountain Middle School students were late to school, or did not show up at all after the most recent theft was discovered, according to Channel 2 Action News.
DeKalb County School Police Chief Don Smith told the news outlet he has created a task force to prevent, prosecute and investigate the crimes. He added the investigation so far has yielded a picture of the suspect’s vehicle driving out of one of the bus yard lots moments after batteries were stolen, which may help police identify the culprit, according to the news outlet.
