Iowa mandates school bus driver background checks

Gov. Terry Branstad signs legislation that requires employers to review the Iowa court information system, as well as the sex offender registry and central registries for child abuse and dependent adult abuse, for information regarding applicants. State director Max Christensen shares with SBF his views on the new law, which also requires checks every five years once applicants are hired.

Camera system captures stop-arm violations

The camera system from Redflex Traffic Systems’ Student Guardian solution is installed on the front and rear driver's side of a school bus. It monitors traffic while the bus' stop arm is displayed, and data supporting possible violations, including video and images of license plates and drivers, is submitted to local law enforcement.

EPA awards grant to N.Y. contractor

Chestnut Ridge Transportation receives the grant to replace and/or upgrade the school bus fleets it operates for East Ramapo and Ramapo central school districts. The funding is awarded as part of the NSTA's "Go Yellow, Go Green" national campaign, which encourages cleaner operation of school buses.

Huntington Coach receives $50K fleet equipment grant

The National School Transportation Association and Zonar Systems co-sponsor the grant, and it was presented to the school bus contractor during the association’s recent Mid-Winter Meeting. Company officials say the money will be used to finish installing GPS technology from Zonar on its fleets.

Terry Branstad has asked the state departments of public safety, education and transportation to work with lawmakers to craft the legislation.
