School bus operators still eligible for fuel tax exemptions

After some IRS offices challenged operators’ claims of exemptions for smaller school buses earlier this year, the NSTA presented the issue to members of Congress, who asked Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner to clarify the tax policy. Geithner stated that the law does not limit the fuel tax exemption based on size of the bus, and the IRS cases have been dismissed.

NSTA donates more than $2K to Special Olympics

The association collected over $2,100 for the Special Olympics' St. Louis chapter in a raffle that was held during NSTA's annual meeting in July, and from the sale of old golf carts that were used for the School Bus Driver International Safety Competition.

EPA bestows funds for bus replacements, retrofits

More than $5.1 million in Diesel Emissions Reduction Act money goes to six organizations to reduce diesel emissions output by vehicles in EPA Region 7. Four of the organizations will use the money for school bus-related projects that include vehicle upgrades and the installation of pollution-control equipment.
