Calif. bus drivers gear up for national safety competition

Six drivers from operations around the state will head to Milwaukee this weekend to participate in the 42nd Annual School Bus Driver International Safety Competition. They will complete a written exam before showcasing their skills in one of three categories in a driving competition.

Repeal of the exemption was under consideration in the Senate Finance Committee. The National School Transportation Association called on committee members to defend against the effort, which association officials said “would have been tantamount to imposing a tax increase on private school bus transportation providers.”

EPA awards grant to N.Y. contractor

Chestnut Ridge Transportation receives the grant to replace and/or upgrade the school bus fleets it operates for East Ramapo and Ramapo central school districts. The funding is awarded as part of the NSTA's "Go Yellow, Go Green" national campaign, which encourages cleaner operation of school buses.

The National School Transportation Association and Zonar Systems co-sponsor the grant, and it was presented to the school bus contractor during the association’s recent Mid-Winter Meeting. Company officials say the money will be used to finish installing GPS technology from Zonar on its fleets.
