Wyoming lawmakers consider tougher bus-passing penalties

The state Legislature’s Joint Education Committee is reportedly interested in raising the penalties for bus-passing violations and making it a stepped offense so that penalties are increased for multiple offenses. The legislators also are considering installing external cameras on all daily route buses to help in catching and citing offenders.

Fort Leavenworth School District, USD #207, faced numerous challenges in transporting students and keeping track of them due to a high student turnover rate, routing changes and budgetary constraints. Officials say that in the two years since EDULOG’s student tracking and routing solutions have been installed, they’ve “never lost a student,” and making changes to routes is “easy.”

Student raises $6,000 for Wi-Fi on school buses

The high schooler has a goal of getting the units installed on some of the buses at his school district, and officials for the Indiana school system say that the superintendent is supportive of the idea. Administrators are developing guidelines for having Wi-Fi installed on buses.

Iowa testing student detection systems for school buses

A system from Rostra Precision Controls Inc. and a system from National Patent Analytical Systems Inc. are undergoing evaluation for potential installation on school buses in the state to help prevent danger zone injuries and fatalities. The installation of such a system is a goal of the Smile BIG Foundation, which was founded in honor of Justin Bradfield. Bradfield was killed in a 2011 danger zone accident.

Florida bill would permit photo enforcement of bus passing

The legislation would enable school boards to authorize that cameras be installed on school buses to capture motorists who illegally pass the buses, and then use that as evidence for law enforcement to issue citations. Violators would be issued a $250 fine.

Now, as a member of FMCSA's Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee, Catapano says he will "help the agency with the regulations that affect NSTA’s members."

South Dakota transit agency ordered to stop school bus routes

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) issues the order to Yankton Transit of Lake Andes earlier this month in response to a complaint that the National School Transportation Association (NSTA) filed in 2011, finding that the agency’s school bus routes are not open to or meant to serve the general public. NSTA President Magda Dimmendaal says “we are glad to see violations such as this recognized and enforced by FTA.”
