After child choked on bus, driver charged with neglect

A school bus driver is arrested and charged with child neglect after a child was choked unconscious by another child on her bus. Detectives say that the driver “failed to provide any assistance to the victim during or after the Oct. 15 attack.”

Bus floor mock-up built for wheelchair tiedown training

The floor features retractable straps for securing a wheelchair in a bus. The supervisor of transportation for Pennsylvania’s Upper Merion Area School District conceived the idea, and Director of Operations Frederick Remelius tells SBF that it has enabled bus drivers and aides to easily practice the procedure several times in the training area instead of having to do it inside a crowded bus.

Former bus driver doesn’t regret breaking up fight

Leon Harris was seriously injured in 2003 after a student hit him with a fire extinguisher when he intervened in a fight between students on his bus. The story comes on the heels of a recent incident in Pinellas County, Fla., in which one school bus passenger was severely beaten by three others. The bus driver complied with district policy, commanding the students to stop fighting and radioing dispatch for help, but not physically intervening.
