EPA offers $3M in school bus purchase rebates

Karl Simon, director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Air Office's Transportation and Climate Division, shares the news during NSTA's annual meeting. EPA provided $2 million in 2012 for school bus purchase rebates, and the program received over 1,000 applications for the 28 awards made.

At the 44th Annual School Bus Driver International Safety Competition, hosted in Charleston, South Carolina, by the National School Transportation Association, three previous winners again take top spots: Billy Wiseman of West Virginia, in the conventional category; Russell Alitzer of Virginia, in the small bus category; and John Welsh of Pennsylvania, in the transit category.

The American School Bus Council takes part in the U.S. Department of Education’s Civil Rights Bus Ride to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. National School Transportation Association member Durham School Services provides the three yellow buses that are used in the event.

Associations asked union not to misuse school bus in campaign

The three national pupil transportation groups wrote to the Labors' International Union of North America, requesting that the union not negatively represent the yellow bus in its highway bill reauthorization campaign. But on Monday, the union launched a tour featuring a school bus that appears to have been smashed by a fallen piece of bridge.

House passes measure to block minimum insurance increase

The National School Transportation Association supports the amendment, saying that it would “stop the administration's pursuit of massive increases that would be very damaging to the industry and potentially decrease safety by reducing the availability of school bus service across the nation."

Anthony Foxx: School bus safety data are ‘remarkable’

The U.S. Secretary of Transportation attends Friday’s main Love the Bus event in High Point, N.C., and says school bus drivers are “unsung heroes.” In a follow-up blog post on Monday, he says that the data on school transportation indicate that the safest way for students to get to school is on a school bus with a “well-trained driver.” He adds that the data are “even more remarkable when you think about just how many students are riding the bus every day.”
