Florida school bus driver killed in crash

According to a preliminary police investigation, a Toyota Camry turned and struck a school bus, which veered off the road and into a pole. The bus driver, 65-year-old William Fowler II, did not survive the crash. The Toyota driver has been charged with DUI, authorities say.

6-year-old Texas girl struck by school bus, later dies

Police said they believe that Jada Craft may have been running late and was trying to catch the bus when she was struck. She later died at her home. Investigators are expected to review the bus’ video surveillance cameras to determine how the accident happened.

10 dead in motorcoach-FedEx truck crash

The bus is traveling on a freeway and carrying high school students on their way to California’s Humboldt State University for a tour when the FedEx semi-truck crosses the freeway’s median and collides with the bus. The drivers of both vehicles, three chaperones and five students are killed. The California Highway Patrol and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the accident.

District revamps emergency procedures for special-needs students

Among the changes at Florida’s Hillsborough County Public Schools transportation department is the requirement for bus drivers to call 911 first when there’s a medical emergency, and bus drivers also receive more training in handling students with disabilities as well as undergo a new debriefing process when a medically fragile student has an issue. The changes are in response to the deaths of two special-needs students in 2012.

NHTSA: 0.35% of fatal crashes were school transportation related

The latest federal data show that of the 348,253 fatal motor vehicle traffic crashes from 2003 to 2012, 1,222 were classified as related to school transportation. A large majority (71%) of those killed in school transportation-related crashes in that 10-year span were occupants of other vehicles.

School district to bring back busing as pilot program

After a 9-year-old girl was fatally struck by a pickup truck while walking home in December, parents petitioned the Etiwanda (Calif.) School District to bring back school bus service. The school board decides to implement a pilot transportation program for students who live at least 3 miles from school.

Report: School bus driver faulted in fatal Idaho crash

In last month's school bus crash near Kuna, Idaho, investigators reportedly believe that the bus driver stopped at a stop sign and then pulled into the path of an approaching dump truck. One student was killed and four others were injured in the collision at a rural intersection.

Six-year-old Zion Toland was trying to cross Highway 178 in Orangeburg, S.C., on Wednesday morning to board his school bus when he was fatally hit by the pickup truck. The South Carolina Highway Patrol says that the bus was making a U-turn and did not have its lights activated or stop arm extended.

Boy struck by school bus in New Jersey, later dies

The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office says that while the bus was stopped to pick up children, “the victim began walking around the front of the bus” and “when the vehicle began moving forward again, it struck the child.” An investigation is ongoing, and counselors are made available throughout the district where the boy attended school.
