Snowstorm leaves students stranded overnight

Thousands of students in the Atlanta area spent Tuesday night at school or, in some cases, even on buses because of a winter storm that froze up traffic. The National Guard came to the aid of some 95 stranded school buses, delivering food and water to the students and getting the buses moving. "We had cleared them all by [Wednesday] morning, and that was a big task," Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal says.

In harsh cold, school buses serve as warming stations

With temperatures hovering in the single digits on Thursday, Nashville residents who needed a break from the bitter cold could climb aboard a "Mobile Warming Station" — also known as a yellow school bus. The city's Office of Emergency Management partnered with Metro Nashville Public Schools for the innovative program.

Durham partners with first responders for safety training

More than 30 Bonner Springs, Kan., firefighters and paramedics participated in the school bus contractor’s training program on bus evacuation to better enable them to assist in an emergency on a school bus. The first responders tested their training hands-on as they explored two styles of buses and could see how each emergency exit worked, including the different door options and roof hatches.

Gov. Sam Brownback proclaimed last Wednesday School Bus Drivers' Appreciation Day in the state. Rannie and Diana Schmidt were among those in the spotlight. The driving duo came across an accident last year and provided critical aid to a mother and daughter.

School buses loaded with supplies for tornado victims

Student transportation provider Durham School Services is collecting emergency supplies for the victims of the devastating storm in Oklahoma. Students from Guthrie, Okla., have also brought a school bus stocked with supplies to Moore, which was hit by a tornado that was more than a mile wide.
