Law enforcement official named School Bus Champion

Tennessee Highway Patrol Lt. Ray Robinson, who is the head of the pupil transportation division of the Highway Patrol and also serves as Tennessee’s chief safety inspector for school buses, receives the American School Bus Council’s award. “To someone who works a lot with oil and grease, there is no bigger honor than to be recognized by your peers,” Robinson says upon accepting the award.

Anthony Foxx: School bus safety data are ‘remarkable’

The U.S. Secretary of Transportation attends Friday’s main Love the Bus event in High Point, N.C., and says school bus drivers are “unsung heroes.” In a follow-up blog post on Monday, he says that the data on school transportation indicate that the safest way for students to get to school is on a school bus with a “well-trained driver.” He adds that the data are “even more remarkable when you think about just how many students are riding the bus every day.”

Teen helps bus driver who collapses at the wheel

Jesse Hermanson and an aide are on the bus when driver Lee Plante loses consciousness while making a U-turn, sending the bus through a brick wall and into a backyard. The teen says he saw Plante halfway out the bus doors, and his thought was to “call 911 and release the emergency switch because the doors kept pinching him.”
