Iowa district purchases school bus company

The Ogden Community Schools board approved the purchase of the district's longtime contractor, Stumbo Transportation, for $360,300 after owner Doug Stumbo announced his plan to retire this year. The district took over service on July 1. Superintendent of Schools Bill Roederer tells SBF he believes the district will save money in the long term by running its transportation department and school buses.

IC Bus prices to rise in September

Citing soaring commodity costs, the manufacturer will add a surcharge of up to $1,495 to the prices of its school and commercial buses. IC Bus President John McKinney says that the company has been able to absorb some increases through manufacturing efficiencies, “but we could not absorb them all.”

Teen fatally struck by tractor-trailer

The accident occurs when Aniya Williams is trying to catch a city bus in Staten Island, N.Y. Williams used to ride a school bus, but service to her school was eliminated. Last week, the state Senate passed a bill to mandate that the city Department of Education provide school bus transportation to children in grades three through eight who live more than one mile from school.
