N.J. enhances school bus safety check tool

The new version of the School Bus Report Card, available online to parents from the state’s Motor Vehicle Commission, features improved search functions, and calculates and supplies the percentage of buses within a particular school yard or bus company that were either initially approved or put out of service. Motor Vehicle Commission Chairman and Chief Administrator Raymond P. Martinez says that the tool reinforces the importance of the state’s stringent bus inspection program.

SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden launched the project in 2005 with the objective of creating a safer environment for passengers and bus drivers worldwide. In addition to the new standard for fire suppression systems, the institute has established a voluntary certification/quality mark.

School buses are among the vehicles being replaced or retrofitted in the latest round of funding for the Diesel Emission Reduction Program, also known as DERA. Sioux Falls (S.D.) School District, for example, is being awarded $450,000 for replacing 18 school buses.

Boat serves as school bus for N.C. students

Some children who live on a peninsula on Lake Norman have drastically shortened their commute by taking a boat to school. Scott Huseby started by ferrying his three children across the water to SouthLake Christian Academy, and he has since expanded the service to other families at no charge.

District deploys camera system to catch stop-arm runners

Muscogee County School District in Columbus, Ga., equips at least 50 of its buses with CrossingGuard, which is provided and maintained by American Traffic Solutions. The county sheriff’s office will review camera footage and issue citations to violators, and officials say the district will receive 25% of the fines in the first year.
