New York districts to share bus services

Watkins Glen Central School District will provide transportation for Odessa-Montour Central School District students in the fall, which is expected to save the latter district about $100,000. The Watkins Glen district will also benefit from the agreement, as travel for sports teams will be combined when possible.

Mom accused of punching child’s friend on bus

Jessica A. Brown is arrested and arraigned, and faces charges of simple assault against a child, unauthorized school bus entry, disorderly conduct and harassment. Documents state that the boy told police that Brown, who is the mother of one of his friends, punched him in his right eye.

VIDEO: Young rappers hype the school bus as 'My Limo'

In the new video by Da Rich Kidzz — a Minneapolis hip hop group ranging in age from 10 to 13 — the youngsters ride a yellow bus and chant the refrain “my school bus is my limo.” While the spot is sponsored by Kmart and plugs back-to-school gear, it also carries messages that seem to promote school bus ridership.

Allied Specialty Vehicles buys Thor's bus business

ASV, the parent company of Type A school bus manufacturer Collins Bus Corp., will acquire Thor Industries’ bus business for $100 million. With the deal, ASV will add to its portfolio such brands as Champion Bus, General Coach America and Goshen Coach.

Georgia district partners with Redflex, Blue Bird to curb stop-arm running

Gwinnett County Public Schools plans to install the Redflex Student Guardian camera system, which is available from Blue Bird dealers like Blue Bird Parts and Service, on 100 school buses by Labor Day and then more later in the school year. The system monitors traffic in both directions, and evidence of potential violations, including video and photos, is submitted to local law enforcement to determine whether a citation is warranted.

Florida court: ‘Stand your ground’ applies to bus fights

A panel of Florida's Fourth District Court of Appeal ruled that the law would allow a boy who got into a fight with a girl on a school bus to claim self-defense. The panel reversed a ruling by a Broward County circuit court judge who found the boy guilty of battery, saying the judge’s conclusion that the statute applied only to the use of deadly force in the protection of one’s home or vehicle was incorrect.

Drivers engage with students in BusSTAR program

Lake Orion (Mich.) Community Schools’ program started out as an initiative for the district’s bus drivers to help teachers in the classroom with reading to students, but it has grown into a larger effort that includes educational activities on the school bus.
