Public outcry over decision to end regular-ed bus service

Hoover (Ala.) City Schools holds a forum to address the board of education’s decision to stop the service with the 2014-15 school year, and parents, students and other community members attend and tell school officials that their decision was a mistake. The district’s superintendent says he is still exploring other variations of the plan, such as phasing in the bus cuts over a longer period of time.

More than 1,200 school bus drivers and attendants are taking part in mock emergency drills to prepare them for a variety of crises. The drills simulate the effects of a fire on a school bus, an armed intruder and a wreck involving a train, among other scenarios.

District’s employees can’t be bus drivers and teachers

Dallas County Schools employees who were hired by Dallas Independent School District (DISD) to transport students and who are also teachers for DISD are told they can’t hold both positions under a new district policy. Officials say the policy change comes in part because one of the drivers was recently caught driving while clocked in as a teacher.

Arkansas launches school bus safety campaign

The three-week effort led by the state Department of Education will be used as an opportunity to remind motorists to obey all traffic laws whenever they are near a school bus. The effort will also seek to remind drivers that it is illegal to pass a stopped school bus when its red lights are flashing and students are loading or unloading.

Flag system shows that bus has been checked

The new Double Check Child/Safety System, conceived by a South Carolina school transportation director, is a reflective flag that can be secured at the back of the bus. At the end of a run, the driver walks to the back, checking for children, and then releases the flag so it hangs in the window — allowing supervisors to see that the bus has been inspected.

New Mexico district's buses to avoid certain bridges

Gallup-McKinley County Schools' buses won't cross metal bridges that are rated for less than 15 tons until the state certifies them safe for the weight of the buses. Meantime, parents will be reimbursed for mileage to take their students to bus stops on the other side of the bridges.

Man arrested in theft of 500 gallons of school bus fuel

In Ripon, Calif., police catch a man allegedly in the act of stealing more than $2,000 worth of fuel from a storage tank used by school buses. The suspect reportedly had a trailer with hoses and pumping equipment for fast siphoning.

Twenty-one bus drivers are learning the language as part of a program that was started to help them better communicate with a growing number of Latino students in the area.
