After a 9-year-old girl was fatally struck by a pickup truck while walking home in December, parents petitioned the Etiwanda (Calif.) School District to bring back school bus service. The school board decides to implement a pilot transportation program for students who live at least 3 miles from school.

Anthony Foxx: School bus safety data are ‘remarkable’

The U.S. Secretary of Transportation attends Friday’s main Love the Bus event in High Point, N.C., and says school bus drivers are “unsung heroes.” In a follow-up blog post on Monday, he says that the data on school transportation indicate that the safest way for students to get to school is on a school bus with a “well-trained driver.” He adds that the data are “even more remarkable when you think about just how many students are riding the bus every day.”

Missouri district ‘goes green’ with CNG buses

Parkway School District in Chesterfield is taking delivery of 30 Saf-T-Liner HDX compressed natural gas Thomas Built buses, with nine in service since the beginning of February. The district is also building a CNG fueling station on-site.

District may invest $1M annually toward new buses

South Carolina’s Horry County Schools is considering making the investment each year until 2019 under a proposal set forth by the district’s chief officer for support services. The proposal was made to get the buses in the fleet under 15 years old to reduce breakdowns and repairs. No final decisions will be made until the district learns whether it will receive additional funding from the state.

Navistar expects $22M annual savings in engine production move

The IC Bus parent company will move mid-range engine production at its Huntsville, Ala., plant to Melrose Park, Ill. Chief Operating Officer Jack Allen says that Navistar has “too much excess engine manufacturing capacity in North America, and we must take action to reduce our costs and improve the business.”

Texas district to equip buses with stop-arm cameras

The Georgetown Independent School District and the Georgetown Police Department partner with road safety camera provider American Traffic Solutions to crack down on illegal passing of school buses. A statewide survey in Texas last year found 9,825 instances of stop-arm running in one day.
