RIVERTON, Wyo. — Students at a local school district are urging state lawmakers to make changes to bus safety laws after the death of a classmate, The Riverton Ranger reports.  

Makayla Marie Strahle was killed in December 2011. She was crossing a road after disembarking her school bus when a vehicle struck her. Her peers recently spoke to members of the state’s education committee during a legislative session, and Jeffrey Verosky, principal of a middle school that some of the students attend, told the newspaper that legislators are going to review some of the proposals submitted.

The proposals include increasing the fines for illegal bus passing and requiring anyone who’s involved in a collision with a school bus to undergo a blood test. (Under current law in Wyoming, school bus drivers must submit to a test, but it’s up to law enforcement's discretion to test the other vehicle’s driver, according to The Riverton Ranger.)
