MONTPELIER, Vt. — School bus driver Hunter Eddy was honored by state public safety leaders last week for outfitting the students he transports to school with reflective wristbands to make them more visible to motorists, WPTZ reports.
Eddy came up with the idea last summer when he stopped by the Vermont State Police booth at the Champlain Valley Fair, and picked up a reflective wristband, according to the news outlet. He bought wristbands for the students on his bus route with his own money.
Eddy was presented with a framed certificate of appreciation by the Department of Public Safety at the Vermont Statehouse, according to WPTZ. He said he couldn’t recall a close call involving a child on his bus route and hopes to keep it that way, the news outlet reports.
Meanwhile, the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles was inspired by Eddy’s initiative, and has purchased thousands of yellow magnetic wristbands for schoolchildren, WPTZ reports. The wristbands are available, first come, first served, to schools that request them.
