OTSEGO, Minn. — Three students were hit by a pickup truck at their school bus stop here on Thursday morning, authorities said.

According to Wright County Sheriff Joe Hagerty, initial reports indicate that an Independent School District 728 bus was stopped with its stop arm extended to pick up students. As the three high schoolers walked toward the bus, an oncoming pickup truck struck them, the sheriff said.

Emergency medical personnel and sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the scene. The three students were taken by ambulance to a local hospital to be treated for injuries. Their conditions were listed as critical.

Hagerty said that the driver of the pickup truck was detained for questioning. The 22-year-old was later arrested and booked into the county jail on charges of criminal vehicular operation.

Independent School District 728 said that the students who were injured in the incident attend Rogers High School. District and building crisis teams, including counselors, were on hand at the school to support students and staff.

"It’s been a difficult day for our Rogers High School community, and our thoughts are with our students and their families," Principal Jason Paurus said in a statement. "In times like these, it is important to come together, lean on each other, and show care and concern for one another.”
