CALGARY, Alberta — A 30-second public service announcement shot here that depicts the dangers of illegally passing stopped school buses was recently released. The video was shot by Kelowna, British Columbia-based Rutland Senior Secondary School students enrolled in a film production class.

The video demonstrates that protecting the lives of students is worth waiting the extra time for a stopped school bus, Kelowna Capital News reports. It was produced in cooperation with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

Between September and January, Kelowna RCMP received 60 complaints of illegal school bus passing incidents in which the bus driver was able to get the license plate number of the offending driver.

This figure signifies a drastic increase — just over 70 tickets were given out for illegal passing incidents in the entire 2009-10 school year, according to the news source.

A radio version of the public service announcement is also expected to be produced.
