SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — An 18-year-old student with autism died on Friday while riding the bus home from school after a reported episode in which he became agitated and was restrained, police told KABC.
San Bernardino Police Lt. Mike Madden told the news source that there was an incident on the bus with Anthony Corona that caused the bus driver to quickly exit the freeway. The bus driver and two aides then worked to restrain Corona, and, Madden added, while they were trying to calm him and de-escalate the situation, he went limp. Corona was then taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.
Police told KABC that Corona was prone to outbursts, and when another student tried to step in to help, he got hurt.
The news source obtained a statement from the school, Bright Futures Academy, which said that the school staff members involved in the incident followed all safety protocols. Two of them performed CPR on Corona after he lost consciousness and the other called 911. The statement also said that an investigation is underway.
An autopsy will be performed on Corona to determine the cause of his death, according to KABC. His aunt has set up a GoFundMe page in honor of Corona for his family.
